For the remainder of the week Isla oscillated between being excited about the gala and feeling sick about it. She’d organized for Dani to have a sleepover with one of her friends from ballet and had found the perfect dress stuffed in the back of her closet with the tags still attached. Granted, they were consignment store tags because Isla couldn’t have afforded to buy a dress like this new.

But the week after the Met Gala she was supposed to have attended an industry award night. Her team at the Gateway Agency had been nominated for Best Audience Engagement Campaign. It was a big deal—a huge recognition of their hard work—and she’d treated herself to something pretty in celebration.

Only, Isla had never made it to the event and the dress had never been worn.

The thought of glamming up and going someplace fancy was exciting. Not to mention that she’d be seeing Theo in a tux, which was sure to be the best visual of her entire life. When he’d confessed to feeling comfortable around her—implying a level of trust that she knew he didn’t hand out easily—well, that warmed her heart.

And then the book... The sweet, personal gesture had made her feel special. Cared for. Appreciated.

But she shouldn’t want those things from him.

“Whoa! You look pretty.” Dani poked her head into the bathroom, her eyes widened in surprise.

“Because I’m such a cave troll normally. Gee, thanks.” Isla laughed and continued to lean toward the mirror, combing a mascara wand through her lashes. Even doing her makeup, something that normally would feel natural as breathing for Isla, was fraught.

If she put too much on, was she trying to look appealing to Theo? If she did too little, would it look like she didn’t care? Should she even be wearing something sexy to an event memorializing a dead woman?

Isla looked at her reflection. The emerald green dress had a somewhat plunging neckline and a slit from floor to midthigh, but the covered back and flutters of fabric gently resting on the tops of her shoulders stopped it from feeling too sexy. Although since she wasn’t generously blessed in the chest area, Isla could easily forgo a bra and that did feel risqué.

Gah! Why was this all so confusing?

She didn’t have butterflies in her stomach. Oh no. She had a goddamn army of dragons in there. Not to mention an echo in her head that said she was excited to see Theo’s reaction to her, and that meant she wasn’t simply dressing up for herself.

“I didn’t mean it like that.” Dani rolled her eyes and came over to wedge herself between Isla and the wall so she could watch. “I mean, it’s not every day you wear a ball gown.”

“That’s very true.”

“I thought you were working tonight.” Dani watched her closely, eyes narrowed as if she was looking for anything that might hint at a lie.

“I am.”

“You don’t look like you’re going to work.”

Isla stuck her mascara wand back into the tube and tossed it into her makeup bag.
